PORTALES, N.M. – The Eastern New Mexico women’s soccer team added another valuable piece to its fantastic defensive backfield as former West Texas A&M defender Makenzie Mendez has transferred to Eastern New Mexico and will compete for the Greyhounds during the 2019 season.

The sophomore from Amarillo, Texas has spent the last two seasons with the West Texas A&M women’s soccer program. In the two seasons she spent at West Texas A&M, the Lady Buffs won the 2018 Lone Star Conference regular season championship as well as advanced to the NCAA Division II National Semifinal after winning the South Central Regional.

During the 2017 season, Mendez played 14 games and made four starts for the Lady Buffs while logging 259 minutes of action.

“We are excited to welcome Makenzie to our program,” said ENMU Head Coach Joshua Smith. “Her strong work ethic, positive attitude, and desire to compete will prove valuable to our program.”

Mendez will bring excellent depth to a backfield that allowed a program-record low 11.4 shots per game and the second-lowest goals allowed per game at 1.15. The 2018 Greyhounds team finished with a 9-9 record overall and advanced to the program’s first ever Lone Star Conference Tournament Championship game.
