ADA, Okla. — Eastern New Mexico women’s soccer defeated East Central 1-0 Thursday afternoon, earning it’s first opening day win since 2006.
The game remained scoreless at the half, but redshirt-junior Kierra Diaz broke up the tie at the 60:55 mark to give the Hounds the 1-0 advantage. Junior Caitlyn Schmidt sent a lead pass to play Diaz into the attacking zone as the forward scanned the goal and hit a stellar left footed shot over the keeper’s head.
Diaz’s first goal of the 2019 season provided Eastern New Mexico with the third opening day win in the program’s 17-year history. Eastern came out strong and continued its relentless attack throughout the match, out-shooting the Tigers 21-9. Midfielder Desiree Morgas put together a solid performance tallying a game-high seven shots.
The Hound’s defense proved to be a formidable force and only allowed four shots on goal. Goalkeeper Whitney Dockweiler began her ENMU career with a strong game, totaling four saves. The junior from Bellevue, Neb. helped her squad to the second opening day shutout in Greyhound’s history, the first of which came in the way of a 0-0 draw in 2016.
The Green and Silver are back in action on Sunday as they take the field against Abilene Christian in exhibition play for the 2019 home opener at 11 a.m. inside Greyhound Stadium.
