Eastern New Mexico women’s basketball were taken down by Texas A&M University-Kingsville, 63-51, on Sunday afternoon at Gil E. Steinke Physical Education Center. ENMU fall to 4-4 on the season, and 0-2 in conference play. The Javelinas bring its record to 8-4 overall, and 2-0 in Lone Star Conference play.
Kingsville started the contest on a hot streak with a 7-2 start in the opening three minutes. From then, Eastern scored the next five points with a Anasha Hurst basket, and a Bella Stone and one, after getting fouled on a layup and making the subsequent free throw, 7-7. With the score at 10-9 TAMUK, the Javelinas closed the quarter on 10-0 run over the final four minutes and forty-five seconds. After the first period, Texas A&M-Kingsville held a 20-9 lead over the Greyhounds.
Iyanna McCurdy began the second quarter with two straight baskets, as Eastern started the quarter on a 6-2 stretch, 22-15 TAMUK. From then, both teams traded baskets over the next three and a half minutes, with Javelinas still holding a 29-23 advantage. Texas A&M-Kingsville closed the quarter on a 7-0, holding a 36-23 lead at the half.
Eastern started out the better of the two teams after the break, starting the quarter with an 8-2 run in the first three minutes and twenty seconds. McCurdy led the charge with a layup and a pull up jumper, then Stacy Ajobiewe found a layup, and Alexsis Johnson nailed two free throws, 38-31 TAMUK. The Javelinas replied with a pair of baskets and slowed down the remainder of period, holding 46-35 lead after 30 minutes.
The final frame started with Texas A&M-Kingsville sporting a 10-6 run, pushing its lead to 56-41 with just five minutes left in the game. McCurdy found five of the next seven points for the Greyhounds, trying to chip away at the 58-48 advantage with just two minutes and twenty-seven seconds remaining. However, the Javelinas would hold out in the final minutes to take a 63-51 win over the Greyhounds.
NOTABLE STATS
- The Hounds posted a 36.7% (22-60) shooting from the field, 0-8 from behind the arc, and 7-10 from the charity stripe. Meanwhile, the Javelinas finished the contest with a 42.3% (22-52) field goal percentage, 34.6% (9-26) from three, and 66.7% (10-15) at the free throw line.
- ENMU out-rebounded TAMUK 38-30, but the Javelinas lead the contest with 26 points off turnovers compared to Hounds 12 points off turnovers.
- McCurdy recorded a game high 19 points, and a game high 11 rebounds during the game. Hurst was the next best scorer for the Hounds with six points, while Ajobiewe added five points.
- Ajobiewe contributed seven rebounds to their stat line, with McCurdy leading Eastern with two steals and two assists.
- Natalie Stice also found two assists, with Kamirah Decker and Alexsis Johnson each posting a block.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- McCurdy recorded a double-doubles for the second straight game after finishing with 19 points and 11 rebounds (both tied career highs).
- Ajobiewe collected a personal best seven rebounds in the contest.
- The Javelinas ended a three-game losing streak to the Hounds, but ENMU still hold a 39-32 series advantage.
