DURANGO, Colo. – The Eastern New Mexico women’s basketball team moves to 1-0 on the season after a 78-66 win against New Mexico Highlands.
A first quarter lead continued throughout the game as the Hounds outscored New Mexico Highlands with a 50 percent field goal percentage and a 45 percent three-point percentage for the contest. Five different Greyhounds scored double-digit point totals with senior Natalie DeLonge leading with 16 points in her Greyhound debut.
Eastern New Mexico connected on 28-of-56 attempts from the field and made 9-of-20 attempts from beyond the three-point line to build an early lead over New Mexico Highlands and never looked back. The Greyhounds used efficient shooting and an outstanding rebound effort with 47 boards for the contest to win the first of two games at the LSC/RMAC Challenge over the weekend.
A strong finish to the third quarter that saw the Hounds extend a 34-28 halftime advantage allowed Eastern to lead by as many as 19 in the fourth quarter of action. The Hounds rattled off nine unanswered points at the 3:40 mark of the third to take final control of the contest.
The Hounds dominated the glass throughout the game, recording 37 defensive rebounds to create a substantial rebounding margin with 47 rebounds to New Mexico Highland’s 25.
DeLonge went 6-of-9 from the field to lead a balanced offensive attack for the Hounds as sophomore Zamorye Cox started off her 2019-20 campaign bettering her scoring average from last season with 11 points. The Portales native led the squad with seven assists and chipped in five rebounds to help get the Hounds started in the right direction.
Freshman Taylor Hall impressed in her Greyhound debut, totaling 11 points as well and matched Cox with a team-high three makes from beyond the three-point arc. Guard Jena Mehlbrech and forward Alivia Lewis served as the final two scorers in double digits with 10 points a piece.
Lewis led the squad with eight rebounds on a night in which five different Hounds recorded five or more boards for the game.
The Hounds will continue play in the LSC/RMAC conference challenge against Fort Lewis tomorrow afternoon at noon in Durango, Colo.
