CANYON, Texas – In its final game of the WT Pak-A-Sak Thanksgiving Classic, Eastern New Mexico women’s basketball turned in a commanding performance and finished the weekend with a 64-41 win over Adams State Saturday afternoon.
Junior Alivia Lewis recorded another solid performance and lead the team with 13 points, shooting five of ten from the field and also pulled in nine rebounds, dished out an assist and recorded a steal. Senior Jerraysha Smith turned in her best game of the season, matching Lewis’s game-high nine boards while adding seven points in 20 minutes of action.
The Hounds defense played well the entire game and forced 15 Grizzlies turnovers which Eastern converted into an extremely efficient 22 points while limiting their opposition to a 29.1 percent field goal percentage. The Green and Silver continue to show why they are one of the best rebounding teams in the nation as the Greyhounds corralled 46 boards compared to 26 from Adams.
The Hounds boast a very deep squad and Head Coach Josh Prock has shown he is not afraid to go to the bench when needed. Eastern has experienced almost no drop-off while starters sit and the Greyhound bench outscored Adams bench 37-9 in the contest.
The Grizzlies were able to jump out to an 11-6 lead to begin the game before the Hounds battled back with six consecutive points. The Hounds would take their first lead of the game in final seconds of the first quarter with a three-point play from Lewis who fought threw traffic and converted on her layup despite being fouled before knocking down her free throw.
Leading 12-11 at the beginning of the second, ENMU shot 75 percent from the field in the second frame as they shot nine of 12 from the field as a squad and took a 36-23 advantage into the locker room.
The Hounds limited the Adams State offense to just five points in the third quarter and would extend their lead to 25 following a jump shot from junior Laura Rowe. The two teams would exchange buckets in the final quarter of play but not before sophomore Jena Mehlbrech stripped the Grizzlies ball handler and sent a pass down court to freshman Taylee Rippee who converted the fast break layup to put the Hounds up by 27.
Eastern will tipoff its 2019-20 home schedule next week when it hosts Northern New Mexico on Thursday in its annual Youth Day Game
