SAN ANGELO, TEXAS – Eastern New Mexico women’s basketball were taken down 78-61 against Angelo State University on Saturday afternoon at Junell Center-Stephens Arena. Eastern slip to 8-7 on the season, with a Lone Star Conference record of 4-5. ASU improve to 7-10 overall, and 4-2 in LSC play.

The Hounds hopped on the board first with two free throws from Iyanna McCurdy and Natalie Stice found a layup, pitting the score at 4-4. From then, Angelo State produced a 12-4 run over the span of three minutes and thirty-nine seconds, 16-8 ASU. Each team gathered two points before the quarter ended, 18-12 Angelo State.

Each team went back and forth trading baskets in the first six minutes of the second quarter, 24-20 ASU. In the stretch, Stice, Kamirah DeckerMeMe Amand, and McCurdy all found layups in that run. The home team would end the half on a sizeable run, 14-7, to take a 38-29 lead at the break. McCurdy found four points, Decker two points, and Stacy Ajobiewe added a free throw to end the half.

After the halftime break, the teams were evenly matched in baskets to start the quarter. An ENMU basket would have an immediate reply from the Rambelles. ASU were efficient in the third period shooting 8-16 from the field and 2-5 from three. Eastern trailed 57-46 heading into the final period.

Angelo State continued their hot shooting in the fourth quarter, sinking its opening two shots to take a 62-46 advantage with 9:21 remaining. The Hounds chipped away at the ASU lead with a 13-7 streak, with Decker and Stice finding two baskets apiece, while Amand and McCurdy added one score each, 69-59 ASU. However, the hopes a comeback was cut short as the Rambelles ended the game on a 9-3 run, for a final of 78-61 ASU.

NOTABLE STATS

  • Eastern finished the game with 32.0% (24-75) shooting from the field, 2-15 from behind the arc, and 11-22 at the free throw line. Angelo State ended the game with 42.4% (28-66) from the field, 36.4% (8-22) at range, and 93.3% (14-15) when shooting free throws.
  • The Hounds collected more rebounds than the Rambelles, 48-44, with ASU outscoring Eastern on the fast break, 14-5.
  • McCurdy had a career day with 22 points and 16 rebounds, leading all competitors in each category. Stice and Decker both reached double figures with 14 points and 12 points, respectively.
  • Amand and Stice each complied five rebounds throughout the game, with Anasha Hurstpulling down four boards.
  • Stice paced the Greyhounds with three assists, while McCurdy found the most steals for ENMU with three.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Angelo State still hold the all-time series lead 47-26 against the Greyhounds.
  • McCurdy tied a career best high with 22 points, and pulled down a personal best 16 rebounds. The 16 rebounds from McCurdy was the most by a Greyhound this season. McCurdy filled the stat sheet with their fifth double-double of the season, and second consecutive double-double.
  • The last player to record 20+ points and 15+ rebounds was Daeshi McCants with 20 points and 19 rebounds against UT Permian Basin on Jan. 27, 2018. McCurdy is just the second player to achieve the feat in the last decade, based on available statistics.
  • Meanwhile, Decker tied a season high 12 points, and has recorded four consecutive games with 10 or more points.
  • As a team, Eastern set a single season high for field goal attempts with 75 field goals.
