Funeral services for Winnie Dodson, 79, of Portales, will be held at 2:00 PM, Thurs., April 22, 2021 in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel with Jerry Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery with Kevin Kennedy, Brandon Kennedy, Quentin Kennedy, Cody Heflin, Gene Heflin, Daniel Hackett and Garrett Dodson serving as pallbearers.

Winnie Pearl Dodson, known to many as “Grandma Winnie,” was born Dec. 13, 1941, in Portales to the home of Mary (Phillips) and Sherman Marvin Heflin and died Sat., April 17, 2021 in Lubbock, TX. Mrs. Dodson attended the Portales Public Schools, where she was later employed. She first worked at the snack bar at the Portales Junior High School. Later, she was a cook at the Portales High School, and Brown Elementary School. She had been retired since 2002.

On Oct. 11, 1958, she was married to Wayne Dodson.  She was an excellent cook, and was known for her pinto beans and tortillas.  She also made excellent peanut patties, cinnamon rolls and various other baked goods.  Mrs. Dodson raised chickens, and always had a nice garden that she canned the produce from.  When she wasn’t gardening or cooking, she did embroidery and sewed.  She was a faithful member of the Northside Church of Christ.

She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Bruce Dodson and Dave and Pat Dodson of Portales; a daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Max Kennedy of Portales; five grandchildren, Kevin (Stephanie) Kennedy, Brandon Kennedy, Quentin Kennedy, Amanda Dodson and Garrett Dodson; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother, Harold Heflin of Portales; and two sisters, Bobby Jean Morrow of Hot Springs, AR and Darlene Hackett of Portales.  She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Sherman Heflin, three sisters, Bertha Heflin, Beulah Osborn and Margie Rush and by her beloved husband, Wayne Dodson who died Aug. 3, 2001.
