Wanda Turnbough Obituary
Funeral services for Wanda Turnbough, 91, of Texico, NM will be held at 1:00 PM, Thurs., Dec. 12, 2024 in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Larry Mitchell officiating. Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery with Daniell Hackett, Donovan Hackett, Robert Turnbough, Glen Neie, Max Winkles, and Randy Cain serving as pallbearers.
Wanda Beth Turnbough was born Feb. 14, 1933 in Portales to the home of Anna (Watts) and Gabe Foster, and died Dec. 1, 2024 in Clovis, NM. Mrs. Turnbough was the granddaughter of Ezra Watts, who was a member of the original Board of Regents for Eastern New Mexico University.
Wanda grew up in the Bethel community. Mrs. Turnbough graduated from Portales High School in 1951. During her high school years she was active in the Glee Club, and also participated in Maypole. On June 22, 1952, she and Manford Turnbough were married at the First United Methodist Church in Portales. During the time that her husband was away in the Army, Wanda sold ads for the Portales News Tribune.
Mrs. Turnbough earned a Bachelor’s and later a Master’s Degree in Education and Reading. In 1964, she began teaching 4th grade in the Texico schools, and retired in 1991 after 27 years. Mrs. Turnbough enjoyed playing the piano, and also gained an Amateur Radio Operators license in 1955. She was an accomplished cook. Among family favorites were the steaks she prepared, her oatmeal cakes and rolls and biscuits. She along with her entire family were members of the Hamlin Memorial Methodist Church in Farwell, TX.
She is survived by one son, David Turnbough of Meridian,ID; a daughter-in-law, Sharon Turnbough of Owasso, OK; seven grandchildren, Matthew (Christy) Turnbough, Janna (Daniel) Hackett, Robert (Mariola) Turnbough, Kirstyn (Paul) Swarer, Denise (Brandon) Lolley, and Jake Turnbough; and 12 great-grandchildren, Mason and Landon Turnbough, Donovan and Savannah Hackett, Rory Clark, Kaleah Turnbough, Larry Swarer, Jaxon and Jessi Lolley, and Dalton, Dani and Hayden Turnbough. She was preceded in death by a sister, Roberta Loy, a son, Mitchell Turnbough a grandson, Jim Turnbough and by her husband, Manford Turnbough who died in 2007.
