TUCSON, ARIZ. – A walk-off homerun in the bottom of the 7th pushed Colorado Mesa University past Eastern New Mexico softball, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Lincoln Field. The Greyhounds move to 7-7 overall, while the Mavericks improve to 6-4.

Both teams were being shut out by the opposing pitching. For the Hounds, Brook Leger tossed five scoreless innings with one hit and no walks, while Colorado Mesa were led by Shea Mauser allowing one hit through the first five innings and no walks.

The sixth saw the first runs for both teams cross the plate. Alanna Larkins led-off with a bunt single, then Mikenzey Patterson poked a single to left field. With runners on first and second with one out, Lisette Urquidez lifted a double to right field, scoring Larkins from second and Patterson advancing to third, 1-0 ENMU. The Hounds weren’t able to force home a second run, as a pop-up and a strikeout ended the inning.

In the next half inning, CMU broke Leger’s no-hitter bid with back to back singles, sending a run home. The Mavericks had the leading run on third, but two strikeouts ended the scoring for CMU at 1-1.

However, Colorado Mesa got threw the Eastern hitters in the top of the seventh and the Mavericks walked it off with a solo homerun, 2-1 CMU.

NOTABLE STATS

  • Eastern recorded four hits during the game and one RBI.
  • Urquidez recorded the Hounds only extra base hit (double), while Larkins, Leger, and Patterson. Urquidez also had the only RBI for ENMU.
  • Leger tossed 6.0+ innings allowing four hits and two runs. Leger collected 10 strikeouts during the loss (6-2).
  • Shea Mauser tossed six innings, allowing four hits and one run. Paige Adair receives the win (4-1) in one inning of work.

“Today was a great game all around. Although it was not the outcome that we wanted, we did some great things against a very competitive team,” said Head Softball Coach Amanda Fefel. “Brook (Leger) threw a great game and was in control the entire game and was in control the entire game. We had our chances to tack on, but wasn’t able to push another run across before the seventh” said Fefel. “Overall, I am very proud of how we got out of this tough weekend”.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • CMU and ENMU met for the first time in two years. The all-time series is now tied at four wins each.
  • Urquidez finished the weekend with six hits over the weekend, and has hit safely in 12 of 14 games this season.
  • Leger posted 10+ strikeouts for the fifth time this season, the most by an LSC pitcher this season.
  • Eastern will play its home opener on Friday, Feb. 25, playing Lubbock Christian in a non-conference double header.
