LAWTON, Okla. – Eastern New Mexico volleyball came away from Lawton, Okla. with a 3-2 come from behind victory against Cameron University on Friday evening. The Hounds move to 3-15 overall, with a conference standing of 3-7, while Cameron now hold a record of 1-22, and a Lone Star Conference (LSC) record of 0-11.
The home team controlled the opening set, jumping out to a 9-5 lead, and following that with a 15-8 lead. ENMU would provide a response with Gracelyn Stubbs and Jasmine Gannon both finding kills, but the Aggies pulled away. Cameron took the first set 25-18, to take a 1-0 lead.
Eastern responded in the second frame, using a large run in the middle of the set to establish a large gap. With the score at 12-11 CU, Eastern put together an 11-3 run to hold a 22-15 advantage. During the streak, Adriana Puni and Mikaela Garvineach found kills, along with Puni and McKinzie Daviscombining for a block. ENMU finished the set 25-20, setting the score at 1-1.
Cameron replied after losing the third set, capitalizing on a large run in the middle of the set to hold a 21-15 lead. Despite the Hounds putting together a late 4-0 run, the Aggies grabbed the third set 25-22.
ENMU opened the fourth set with the first three points and never surrendered their lead from then. The Hounds kept their distance during the fourth stanza, providing a hitting percentage of 0.333 in the set with 11 kills on 24 swings. Eastern collected the fourth set, 25-17, and forced a decisive fifth set.
The momentum for the Hounds continued into the final set, opening the final frame on a 7-2 streak. Jordan O’Connor-Dempsey found two kills in the opening streak, while Gannon, Puni, and Garvin also found kills. ENMU did not relinquish their lead in the final set, winning the set 15-10, and the match 3-2.
NOTABLE STATS
- The ENMU offense led the way in kills, finding 53 kills, with Cameron posting 48 kills.
- Defensively, ENMU held the edge over Cameron in digs, 75-68, with the Aggies having more total blocks then the Hounds, 11.0-8.0.
- Gannon paced the Greyhounds with 15 kills, Garvin added 10 kills, and Stubbs contributed nine kills.
- Rae Sapiga led the way with 23 assists, Qitana Sapiga was next best with 16 assists.
- The Hounds were spread out on defense with Daejia Rodriguez leading the Greyhounds with 17 digs. Gannon and R. Sapiga were just behind with 15 digs and 14 digs, respectively. Q. Sapiga also hit double-digits with 10 digs.
- Puni led the Hounds with four total blocks on the night.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Gannon hit their eighth double-double on the season (15 kills, 15 digs), while Q. Sapiga posted their third double-double of the year (16 assists, 10 digs), and R. Sapiga registered their second double-double of the campagin (23 assists, 14 digs).
- R. Sapiga posted a season high in both digs (14), and service aces (5). Rodriguez posted a career high defensively with 17 digs, and O’Connor-Dempsey found a career best eight digs on the evening.
- The Greyhounds captured their first five-set victory over the Aggies since 2002, when Eastern bested Cameron, 3-2, on Oct. 26, 2002.
- ENMU improve their win-streak over Cameron to eight straight games, with the Hounds last lost against the Aggies coming in 2015, a 3-2 loss on Sept. 29.
- Eastern jump back into action the next day, traveling to Wichita Falls, Texas for a clash with Midwestern State University on Saturday, with first serve at 11 a.m.
