PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico fell in a sweep to University of Texas Permian Basin, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon at Greyhound Arena. The Hounds fall to 1-3 in Lone Star Conference play, while the Falcons move to 2-1.

The visiting Falcons started the first set with a 6-2 run to jump out early. From then, Eastern poked at the UTPB lead but could not reduce the gap. With the score at 19-12 Falcons, ENMU started to heat up going on a 7-2 run. A Jasmine Gannon kill and a block from Jordan O’Connor-Dempsey and Mikaela Garvin sparked the rally for the Greyhounds. However, UT Permian Basin eventually closed out the set by a score of 25-21.

UTPB established a large lead in the second set right from the beginning. The Falcons jumped out to a 12-1 lead on ENMU and never looked back. ENMU were able to put together a handful of points, but UTPB controlled the second set 25-10, holding a 2-0 set lead over ENMU.

ENMU took a slim lead at the start of the third set, following a Jasmine Gannon kill to make it 5-4 Eastern. From then, the Falcons rattled off a 10-1 run, taking control of the set 14-6. The Hounds did provide a small comeback, collecting four straight points with from kills from Gannon and O’Connor-Dempsey, along with a Gracelyn Stubbs ace. However, UT Permian Basin closed the set, and the match on a 5-1 streak, ending the third set 25-16, coming away 3-0 winners.

NOTABLE STATS

  • UTPB held the edge on kills and digs on the afternoon. The Falcons had 40 kills versus the Hounds 21 kills. Meanwhile, UT Permian Basin had 46 digs, compared to 42 digs for Eastern.
  • The ENMU offense was led by Gannon, who recorded seven kills.
  • Qitana Sapiga provided 10 assists, Eliana Luteru supplied six assists.
  • McKinzie Davis led the defense in digs with 14, while Adriana Puni was next best with eight digs.
  • Garvin paced the Greyhounds with two blocks.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Davis tallied a career high in digs, surpassing the previous mark of 11 set against DBU on Sept. 3rd of this year.
  • The Hounds next head west, to play West Texas A&M on Wednesday, Sept. 29th in Canyon, Texas. The first set will begin at 5 p.m.
