Funeral services for Virginia Stewart, 88, of Portales, will be held at 10:00 AM, Fri., Sept. 9, 2022 in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel with Rev. John Lowrie and Pastor Kelly Fulfer officiating.  Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery with Jerry Tivis, Kim Dewayne Tivis, Boyd Miller, Duane Chase, Regi Corbin and Arkie Kiehne serving as pallbearers.  The family will receive guests at the funeral home from 6 to 8 PM on Thursday evening.

Virginia Louise Stewart was born Nov. 29, 1933 in Goodland, TX to the home of Susie Louise (Emberson) Tivis and Fate Tivis, and died early on the morning of Sept. 5, 2022 in Portales, NM.  Virginia left school to go to work at the Portales Steam Laundry.  From there she moved to Alamogordo where she was employed at the Piggly Wiggly Grocery Store.  In 1959, Virginia moved to Lubbock to attend Draughns Business College.  After completing her Associates Degree in Accounting, she worked as an accountant the remainder of her working life.  While living in Lubbock, she was employed at Service Compress for thirteen years.  In 1964, she was married to Billy Stewart, but later divorced.  The couple made their home in Mission Viejo, CA in the 1970’s and then moved to Stanford, CT.  In 1985, Virginia moved to Plano, TX where she was the Accountant for Hillcrest Church until 2007.  At that time she retired and returned to Portales.  After moving back to Portales, she helped her sister-in-law, Nancy Tivis at her store, The Fashion Girl.

Virginia enjoyed working in her yard and gardening. She loved animals, and was devoted to her cat, Prissy and her dog, Little Bit. Reading was a constant, enjoying Spiritual books as well as fiction. On television she always liked to watch documentaries about history and travel. She personally had made several trips to Israel, as well as to Hawaii, and other destinations in Europe. She attended Trinity Assembly of God Church here in Portales.

She is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Cherry Tivis of Portales; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary Helen and Webb Corbin of Lubbock, TX, Lavon and Johnny Chase of Clovis, NM and Laveda and Boyd Miller of Portales; as well as a number of nieces and nephews and other family members.  She was preceded in death by her parents, and three brothers, Billy Ray Tivis in 2004, Donald Leroy Tivis in 2015 and JR Tivis in 2016.
