With Veterans Day coming up this month, many businesses in town are planning on holding events or are having special discounts for veterans.
Eastern New Mexico University is hosting a Veterans Day celebration at the Golden Student Success Center on Nov. 12 with special presentations from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. There will also be an information fair from noon to 4 p.m. and a closing flag ceremony at 4 p.m. This will be held to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the WWII armistice.
The American Legion also plans on holding a commemoration ceremony on Nov. 11 at 10 a.m. at the Memorial Building in Portales. This should be a brief ceremony, according to Dale Streeter, head of the American Legion in Portales. The ceremony will include the pledge of allegiance, post to colors, a guest speaker, and a clergyman to say an invocation.
Clovis will host a parade and ceremony on Nov. 10 in downtown Clovis. There will be different organizations and floats in attendance that will be showing their military pride.
The Clovis Veterans Memorial District will be hosting a Veterans Day Pancake Breakfast on Nov. 11. Admission will be $7 per person, and there will be boutique, bakery, and raffle items available.
Many restaurants will be offering free meals or discounts to anyone who has ever served in the military and those who are currently active duty. In Clovis, N.M., Veterans and active duty members can go to Chili’s, Applebee’s, IHOP, Cici’s, Little Caesar’s, Buffalo Wild Wings, and Wienerschnitzel to have a free or discounted meal.
“Veterans Day is a day to celebrate all who and currently serve the armed forces,” says U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Michael Rossi. “For me, I joined so that I could serve my family, my friends, and above all my country.”
