PORTALES, N.M. – The Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team powered past Western New Mexico, 3-0 (28-26, 25-19, 25-21) on Monday evening at Greyhound Arena in front of 225 rowdy fans. The win moves the Greyhounds to 9-14 overall and 6-7 in Lone Star Conference matches.
The victory gives ENMU a 6-1 mark at home, where the Green and Silver have won 15 of their last 17 matches before welcoming in Cameron and Midwestern State for a pivotal weekend showdown.
Sophomore Sarah Tuioti-Mariner opened the game on a tear, racking up 10 kills in the first set alone before finishing with 17 on the night. On 35 swings, the Corona, Calif., native committed just three errors and hit a blistering .400 to lead the Hounds. Senior Brooklyn Biel notched 12 kills while the freshman duo of Natasha McClendon and Marissa Ellis had eight and six kills, respectively. Senior Andrea Aguilar put up 18 digs and also added three of the four service aces for the Green and Silver. In the middle, Amanda Dietz rejected five shots from the Mustangs and Jasmine Gannonadded three blocks and five kills.
In each of the first two sets, ENMU came out of the gate slowly, but finished each set strong to take the lead into the intermission. Trailing 17-16 in the second set, the Greyhounds mounted a 9-2 run to carry a 2-0 lead into the locker room, capped off by a pair of aces from Aguilar. The final set featured another strong close from the Hounds with a 4-0 run to clinch the match.
ENMU is back in action on Friday, Oct. 27 against Cameron. First serve against the Aggies is slated for 5 p.m. in Greyhound Arena.
