Eastern New Mexico track & field head coach Jeff Kavalunas recently announced the Greyhounds schedule for the indoor and outdoor seasons.
“I’m excited to get the track and field season started. I think we have put together a pretty good schedule that will get us ready for the LSC championships and NCAA championships” said head coach Jeff Kavalunas. “We missed being able to compete in the 2021 indoor season, so we are ready to get started and face great competition”.
The Hounds will start its season at the Texas Tech Corky Classic on Jan. 14-15, in Lubbock, Texas. Eastern will take part in three more meets (Dr. MLK Collegiate Invitational, UNM Team Open, and Texas Tech Shoot Out) before the Lone Star Conference Championships on Feb. 25-27, held at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. The Greyhounds will hope to send national qualifiers to Pittsburg, Kansas for the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championship meet on Mar. 11-12.
“We stay pretty close to home competing at University of New Mexico, and Texas Tech, but those are some of the premier indoor facilities around and some of the best competition in the country” said Kavalunas. “A handful of the meets will be against schools such as LSU and Oregon along with hosts University of New Mexico and Texas Tech which are all great programs”.
ENMU’s outdoor season will begin at the WTAMU Spring Break Classic held on Mar. 18, in Canyon, Texas. The next week, Eastern will host the Greyhound Open on Mar. 26 with events being held at Greyhound Stadium.
The Hounds will continue to its season with five meets in the month of April, including heading back to West Texas A&M for the WTAMU Classic and Multi on April 7-9, in Canyon, Texas, and the nationally renowned Drake Relays on April 27-30 in Des Moines, Iowa.
“The outdoor season is a little more diverse” said Kavalunas. “We are again looking forward to hosting our Greyhound Open in March after a two-year layoff and we are also to take some athletes to the Drake Relays, one of the premier collegiate track and field meets in the country”.
The Hounds will compete for the LSC Outdoor Track & Field Championship on the campus of Texas A&M University- Kingsville, in Kingsville, Texas, on May 5-6. From then, ENMU will head to the West Texas Last Chance Qualifier on May 15 in Canyon, Texas. Eastern will look to send a few Greyhounds to the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championship meet in Allendale, Mich. on May 27-29.
