The Eastern New Mexico track and field team officially opened the outdoor season with its home meet, the Greyhound Open at Greyhound Stadium on Saturday.
Overall, the Greyhounds won 17 events in the second annual Greyhound Open.
On the women’s side, senior sprinter Danee Bustos was victorious in three events, winning the 200-meter event with a time of 24.51. Bustos was also a part of two relay winning teams, as the 4×100-meter relay team of Bustos, Maijah Mathis, Lateria Slaughter and Kandice Miles won with a time of 47.63 and the 4×400-meter team of Bustos, Miles, Kiana Covington, and Mason Swanson crossed the finish line in 4:18.58.
Mathis also came away with an individual win in the 100-meter dash, crossing the line in 12.00 and just missed tying her program record time by 0.01 seconds. Mathis also took second in the 200-meter, turning in a time of 24.85 for the third-best mark in program history.
In the 800-meter, Swanson pulled out the victory with a time of 2:23.91 while Brooke Walker took home the gold in the 400-meter hurdles with the fifth-best mark in ENMU history with a 1:09.60.
Kiana Covington was victorious in the 400-meter dash after crossing the finish line in 1:00.83 while Mercy Rotich won the 1500-meter with a time of 5:00.30.
Bryanna Williams rounded out the winners on the women’s side after coming away with an 11.17-meter throw in the shot put.
Highlighting the men’s performers was junior middle distance runner Ivar Moinat and freshman sprinter Andrew Villegas as each won three events.
In the individual races, Moinat took home the wins in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.28 as well as the 1500-meter run after crossing the finish line in 4:19.35. Moinat and Villegas were also part of the 4×400-meter relay team with Brandon Chavez and Travonne Armstead that turned in a time of 3:31.50 for the win.
Villegas picked up an individual win in the 200-meter dash with a 22.41 while also being a part of the 4×100-meter team with Armstead, Chavez, and Damarjae Cortez that won the event with a time of 42.63.
Senior distance runner Garrett Meyer turned in the top time in the 5000-meter run with a 17:52.70 while Ezra Bagwell won the 110-meter hurdles after crossing the line in 16.15.
Clarence Cowart rounded out the Hounds individual winners with a dominant victory in the javelin throw. His toss of 43.61-meters was more than nine meters better than the next closest finisher.
The Greyhounds will now look ahead to next week as Eastern will compete in the Texas Relays, hosted by the University of Texas in Austin. The Hounds will open the meet on Thursday, March 28 and wrap up on Saturday, March 30.
