PORTALES, NM —One day before the start of the 2018 Lone Star Conference Championship tournament, the league office held its annual awards banquet. The Eastern New Mexico University men’s basketball team was well represented with Lamarquis Thompson and Zach Parker receiving honorable mention honors.
One year removed from nearly making the league tournament, the duo reversed last season’s outcome with a 58-56 road win over Texas A&M-Kingsville to qualify for postseason play. The win culminated a year-long effort for the Hounds to return to the tournament.
Thompson paced ENMU in scoring seven times and brought a strong all-around game to the floor. The senior guard opened the season strong with a 23-point, 13 rebound effort against nationally-ranked Fort Lewis. He capped that contest with a game-winning trey with just one second remaining. Thompson also poured in 21 points against Azusa Pacific.
Parker averaged 11.6 points per game and was extremely proficient from outside the three-point line. The junior guard connected for five treys in contests against Angelo State and Dixie State and hit 49 three-point shots for the season. Parker had a season-best 25 points against Dixie State, along with three steals. He also put forth a 20-point effort in a Greyhound victory against Lubbock Christian and had a 23-point game at Angelo State.
On Friday night, the Eastern New Mexico University men’s basketball team will have first-round action against top-seeded West Texas A&M in the LSC Tournament. Tipoff at Dr Pepper Arena is at 7:30 p.m. MT. Please visit the LSC Website for ticket information.
