Portales showed up with warm hearts and full wallets to a local fundraiser. Supporters came out in crowds, and lines stretched out the door. It was such a huge success, and all in support of Sweetwater’s at Landall’s employee, and Portales native, Brittany Kanmore.
Landall and Peggy Goolsby have been among the many praying for and concerned about Brittany after her terrible car accident at the intersection of Highway 60/84 and NM 476 at the end of January.
As much of Portales knows, the accident left Brittany with a broken pelvis, neck, and skull, along with a traumatic brain injury. The journey ahead for her is long, even with continuing improvements being made by the strong-willed young woman!
Brittany has been an employee of Sweetwater’s at Landall’s for almost a year. When the accident happened, her co-workers, along with much of the community, were heart-broken. But, in Portales fashion, they rallied together to help minimize the insurmountable medical bills the Kanmore family is facing.
Many businesses, as well as family friends and others, have been doing their share of fundraising to help Brittany and her family.
Creighton’s Town and Country had a grill raffle. The Happy Place and the Courthouse Cafe hosted a silent auction, and the Children’s Home hosted a BBQ fundraiser meal that was planned by Jolie Foster. Friends have sold car decals, rubber bracelets, T-shirts, and more!
The whole community has come together to help pay for her medical bills.
Sweetwater’s at Landall’s was no exception, as they hosted an Ice Cream Fundraiser for her on Sunday, March 3.
Her co-workers spent their day scooping ice cream for hopefuls there to support her recovery.
The temperature outside that particular Sunday was anything but ideal for ice cream cravings, barely reaching above 25 degrees. That didn’t stop people from all around coming to support the Kanmore family.
At the end of the day, Sweetwater’s had scooped their way through 75 gallons of their delicious ice cream. The employees were exhausted, but so pleased to have seen such a showing from the community.
Landall Goolsby, owner of Sweetwater’s at Landall’s and Landall’s Box Office, said he was thrilled with the outcome. He and his mom, Peggy Goolsby, have loved having Brittany as an employee, and lovingly anticipate her return to their Sweetwater’s family.
Brittany’s road ahead is still difficult, but the people of Portales, with their warm hearts, are making that fight a little bit easier.
It’s just another reason Portales is a wonderful community to call home.
