After a bye week because of the #2 seed Portales was placed at in NMAA Class 4A, the Rams hosted Silver High School (#10) on Saturday, November 16 for a state quarterfinals game. Kickoff was at 1 pm at Greyhound Stadium. The first quarter was scoreless for both teams, but Portales kicked it into gear in the 2nd and out scored Silver 17-7 with touchdowns from Baylor Diaz (#15) and Kellan Hightower (#3) and a field goal for 3.
After halftime, Silver held Portales to a lone field goal, making it 20-7 for the 2 teams. Then, early in the 4th, Portales intercepted a pass from Silver, and quickly sent Romeo Gbassagee (#23) in for a rushing touchdown adding another 6 plus the extra point for the Rams. One more touchdown was added by Portales, whose defense dominated the game, holding Silver to only 7 points. The final score of the game was 33-7 in favor of the Rams.
With the win, Portales sealed their spot in the state 4A semifinals. They will face Lovington at Lovington High School 1 pm on November 23. Winner of that game will move forward to the state championship game against the winner of #1 Bloomfield at #4 Grants who also play on the weekend of November 22-23.
