Eastern New Mexico women’s basketball couldn’t kept pace with high scoring #6 Texas A&M University-Commerce, 94-65, on Saturday afternoon at The Field House. The Hounds slip to 5-6 on the season, and 1-4 in Lone Star Conference (LSC) play. Meanwhile, the Lions move to 13-1 on the season, on 2-1 in LSC action.

The Hounds opened the contest by trading scores with the Lions, with Natalie Stice finding two layups, with Kamirah Decker and Iyanna McCurdy converting underneath the basket, 8-8. From then, the home team started an 11-0 run over a two minutes and forty-three second span, 19-8 TAMUC. Eastern briefly responded with five straight points, but Texas A&M-Commerce replied with a 9-0 streak to end the quarter at 28-13 Lions.

ENMU began the second frame with seven points, cutting the deficit to eight points, 28-20 TAMUC. At that point, TAMUC held the Hounds to just three field goals over the final seven and half minutes, using a 23-6 run to reestablish its large lead. The Hounds did end the quarter on a 6-2 run, after MeMe AmandLaura Rowe, and Anasha Hurst each hit two free throws, but trailed 53-34 at halftime.

Out of the locker-room, ENMU started the better of the two teams with a 12-6 run. In the streak, Decker found four points, with Stice, Hurst, and Bella Stone finding the cup. The high scoring Lions continued to score, with Amand and McCurdy taking control of the Eastern offense for the rest of the game. McCurdy and Amand combined for 11 points in the third quarter, with the scoreboard reading 76-57 heading into the final period.

Texas A&M-Commerce started the final quarter on 10-0 run, extending the gap to 86-57 TAMUC. McCurdy found six points in the final ten minutes, with Amand adding a layup in the closing stages. The contest finished 94-65 in favor of the Lions.

NOTABLE STATS

  • The Hounds finished the afternoon 33.3% (23-69) from the field, 15.4% (2-13) from range, and 73.9% (17-23) at the free throw line. Texas A&M-Commerce ended the game with a shooting percentage of 52.5% (32-61), 36.8% (7-19) from behind the arc, and 83.1% (23-28) from the charity stripe.

  • Eastern finished the game with 39 rebounds compared to the Lions 38 boards. The TAMUC bench finished with 46 points, compared to the 13 points from the Eastern bench.

  • McCurdy led all scorers with 22 points, with Amand finishing with 15 points for ENMU. Stice, Decker, and Hurst each added six points to the Hounds effort.

  • Amand pulled down a game high 12 rebounds, while McCurdy found the second most rebounds on the afternoon with seven rebounds (all offensive rebounds).

  • Hurst paced the Hounds with three assists and five steals, both team highs.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • The Lions have now tied the all-time series 34-34, after winning the last five meetings between the two schools.

  • McCurdy’s 22 points set a new career high for the Philadelphia,Pa. native, and marks the most points scored by a Greyhound in a single-game this season.

  • Also setting career bests, Amand’s 15 points and 12 rebounds is a personal best in an Greyhound uniform, while securing thier first double-double of the season. Amand’s 12 rebound’s also tied a single-game high for rebounds this season.

  • Hurst found a career best five steals, and tied a season high five rebounds during the game. Hurst’s five steals also tied a single-game high for steals during the game.

  • As a team, the Greyhounds registered a season high 17 made fee-throws, along with a single-game high for field goals attempts (69 FGA) on the season.

  • ENMU next play at home against St. Mary’s University, on Thursday, Jan. 20. First tip from Greyhound Arena will begin at 5 p.m.
