PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico football’s Wyatt Strand has been named the GoEasternAthletics.com Athlete of the Month for the month of September.
As voted upon by the athletic department staff, Strand becomes the inaugural winner of the award after leading the Greyhound football team to a record of 3-1 throughout the month of September. The senior quarterback accounted for 10 total touchdowns in four games for the Hounds and has guided Eastern New Mexico to the best rushing offense in all of Division II football (426.8 ypg) and the nation’s 11th best total offense in the nation (490.5 ypg).
Strand was named the Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Hounds to a 44-37 overtime win on the road at Colorado Mesa. The Logan, N.M. native scored three rushing touchdowns, including the game-winner in overtime, and accounted for 223 total yards on the night.
That performance against Colorado Mesa was followed up by two straight 100 yard rushing games for Strand against Texas A&M-Commerce and Texas A&M-Kingsville. Strand totaled seven rushing touchdowns in the final three games of the month of September, tied for most in the Lone Star Conference this season.
He ranks third in the LSC with 466 yards rushing through the first four weeks of the season and averages 10.5 points per game, tied for the best mark in the Lone Star Conference.
Strand and the Greyhounds will look to improve to 4-1 on the season tomorrow night against Midwestern State on the road in Wichita Falls, Texas.
