Graveside services for Stephen Earl Poe, 80, of Portales, will be held at 10:00 AM, Fri., July 31, 2020 in the Portales Cemetery. Scott Poe, Jacob Mendoza, Garrett Poe, Brennan Poe, Ryan Cherry, Kyren Poe and Peyton Poe will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Stephen Earl Poe was born July 30, 1939, in Hyndman, PA to the home of Opal Mable (Simms) and Pascal John Poe, and died early on the morning of July 25, 2020 in Lubbock, TX. Mr. Poe grew up Kennel’s Mill, PA. His father died when Stephen was a young boy, and he began supporting his family at the age of 12. He worked cutting and stacking firewood, just doing whatever he could find to feed his family. He joined the US Air Force, and was stationed at Cannon Air Force Base in the late 1950’s. He soon met Virginia Newberry, who was working at Mack’s Drive In. they were married Mar. 3, 1959. His next duty station was in Germany, and when he returned in 1962, they came back to Portales to make their home. They settled on a small farm outside of town, and he did some farming until 1980 or so. In addition, he began working for Roosevelt County Electric as a tree trimmer, and retired as a Line Supervisor in 1992. He and his wife were faithful supporters of all their children and grandchildren’s activities, and traveled far and wide to attend their games and sporting events.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia of the home; two sons, Stephen Poe, Jr. of Artesia, NM and Johnny and Lindy Poe of Silver City, NM; eight grandchildren, Stephanie Miranda, Scott O (Dawnell) Poe, Stacey (Jacob) Mendoza, Garrett (Charli) Poe, Brennan (Samantha) Poe, Kayla (Ryan) Cherry, Kyren Poe and his Fiance, Ashley Rabine and Peyton Poe; 13 great-grandchildren; a brother, Jim Poe of Puyallup, WA and two sisters, Betty Lewis of Hundman, PA and Shelba Garlock of Hagerstown, MD. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Andy Poe, a sister, Lena Shoryer, a daughter, Joyce Lynn Poe who died at the age of 2 and by a son, Eddy Poe who died Mar. 24, 2019.
