Sophia Christina Hooper was born Sept. 15, 1969 in Portales to the home of Consuelo (Baca) and Jose Lino Garcia, and died at her home on the afternoon of Oct. 9, 2023.  Sophia was a life long resident of Portales.  After attending the Portales schools, she went on to study at Clovis Community College and Eastern New Mexico University.  Beginning in 1989, she was employed at Graham Abstract.  In 2000, she left to go to work as the dispatcher for Western Dairy Transport. On July 15, 2005 in Clovis, she was married to James Hooper, and then on June 3, 2017 they repeated their vows in a formal wedding at St. Helen Catholic Church. Together they established Custom Maid Cleaning Services.  In addition to her other duties, she began cleaning houses and the offices of Graham Abstract and also of Dairy Farmers of America.  In 2013 she became the Operations Manager for Great Wide Trucking, and then in May of 2015, she took a position as Operations Manager for Red Stagg Trucking.  After various promotions, she was named as President for the company in December of 2020, a position she held until her death.

Sophia enjoyed sewing and doing crafts of various types.  She made countless baby blankets.  Her favorite form of entertainment became going to casinos where she was uncannily lucky.  Time after time, she won more than their trip cost.  It all began when she won a raffle at Blanca’s in Clovis for her wedding dress, along with the other dresses and tuxedos for her wedding.  From then on, she was hooked.

She is survived by James, her husband of 18 years of their home; two daughters and a son-in-law, Leah and Darhen Pineda of Portales and Paige Elizabeth Hooper of Stephenville, TX; two sons, Jesse James Hooper of Fredrick, MD and Preston James Hooper of Stephenville, TX; two grandchildren, Zehyna Pineda and Colton Altenhoff Hooper; her parents, Consuelo and Jose Lino Garcia of Portales; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Jose Lino, Jr. and Shari Garcia of Ocean Springs, MS and Juan Modesto and Melissa Garcia of Portales; and two sisters and a brother-in-law, Cynthia Ann Herrera and Carla M. and Ray Valencia of Las Cruces, NM.  She was preceded in death by a brother, Nicholas Baca on Sept. 19, 2019.
