LAREDO, Texas – The Eastern New Mexico softball team traveled to Texas A&M International for a non-conference game on Saturday afternoon. The Greyhounds were handed a 14-3 five inning loss.
The Dustdevils jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning due in part to a three-run home run from Briana Arredondo. TAMIU extended that lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the second after a two-run homer from Heather Ruiz and an RBI double from Darrian Smith.
The third inning saw another Dustdevil homer, this time a grand slam from Morgan Chavarria. Arredondo added an RBI single to make the score 12-0.
TAMIU saw two more runs cross home plate in the bottom of the fourth to stretch their lead to 14-0.
However, the Greyhounds responded in the top of the fifth inning to break the shutout attempt. Eastern tallied three runs, but it was not enough as the Dustdevils picked up the 14-3 victory.
Offensively, Mikenzey Patterson, Jokaira Paredes, Azalea Martinez, and Alanna Larkins all notched one hit for the Hounds. Martinez’s hit was a double, while Larkins had the lone RBI of the game for Eastern.
Tava Boone got the start and loss in the circle after putting in 2.1 innings of work. Maite Bustillos finished out the remainder of the contest.
The Hounds and Dustdevils meet again for a Lone Star Conference doubleheader on Sunday at 10 a.m.
