AUSTIN, Texas – The Eastern New Mexico softball team wrapped up the 2021 season with two losses at St. Edward’s on Friday afternoon. The Greyhounds dropped the first game, 8-4, and the second, 5-3. With the two losses, Eastern finishes the season with an overall record of 4-27 and a 4-26 mark in the Lone Star Conference.
GAME ONE: SEU 8, ENMU 4
The Hilltoppers gained a 5-0 advantage in the top of the second inning, highlighted by a two-RBI single from Alexis Massie.
Eastern responded in the bottom the third with four runs of its own to cut the deficit to 5-4. Azalea Martinez drove home the first Greyhound run on a single up the middle before Kianna Galindo hit a three-RBI double to left center.
In the top of the seventh inning, St. Edward’s saw three runs cross the plate to take an 8-4 lead.
Eastern was held scoreless in the bottom of the frame to give the Hilltoppers the win.
Offensively, Martinez, Galindo, and Mikenzey Patterson led the way with two hits each. Alanna Larkins and Jokaira Paredes notched one hit apiece.
In the circle, Brook Leger pitched all seven innings for the Hounds and was credited with the loss. She allowed six hits, eight runs (three earned), and five walks while striking out four batters.
GAME TWO: SEU 5, ENMU 3
St. Edward’s once again jumped out to an early lead with one run in the first frame. They went on to tally two more runs in the top of the fourth on a two-run homer from Lauren Werning to make it a 3-0 game.
The Hounds saw three runs on two hits and one Hilltopper error to tie the game, 3-3, in the bottom of the fifth inning. Eastern saw runs score on an error, a walk, and a single from Galindo.
In the seventh, St. Edward’s managed to score two more runs and then shutdown the Eastern offense to secure the 5-3 victory and doubleheader sweep.
Eastern New Mexico saw one hit each from Paredes, Galindo, Larkins, Patterson, and Bella Mendoza throughout the game.
Martinez tossed the complete game in the circle for the Hounds. She allowed four hits, five runs (four earned), and three walks in seven innings of work.
