SAN ANGELO, TEXAS – Eastern New Mexico softball lost a pair of tight games against #18 Angelo State University on Saturday afternoon at Mayer Stadium. Angelo State picked up game one on a walk off, 2-1, over ENMU. In game two, ASU won 8-7 preventing an Eastern comeback after the Hounds scored four runs in the final inning. The Hounds slip to 8-14 overall, and 1-5 in conference action. The Rambelles improve to 18-4 overall and 3-3 in LSC play.

GAME ONE: ASU 2, ENMU 1

Each team started the game with strong pitching through the first three innings. Both teams were held to one hit in the first three frames, with Brook Legerposting eight K’s in in the first nine outs.

Eastern threatened in the fourth frame loading the bases after two walks and a base hit from Lisette Urquidez. However, Angelo State got out of the inning without conceding a run after turning a 5-2 double play, and a groundout ended the inning. The Hounds defense turned a double-play in the next half inning, 6-4-3 to keep the score at 0-0 after four innings.

The games first run came across in the sixth inning for the Greyhounds. A leadoff single for Urquidez got a runner on base, and Mikenzey Patterson came in as a pinch runner. After Patterson swiped second base, Jokaira Paredes delivered a single up the middle and Patterson beat the play at the plate for a 1-0 lead for ENMU. Leger posted a single directly after, but a Paredes was thrown out from right field after turning for home as the inning ended 1-0 ENMU.

However, ASU responded with a run after a leadoff walk and a stolen base put the runner on second. A double scored the first run for the Rambelles, as a groundout ended the inning, 1-1 heading to the seventh inning. After a scoreless top of the seventh, Angelo walked it off with a bases loaded single to take game one, 2-1, over ENMU.

NOTABLE STATS

  • The Hounds posted five hits in the game, along with one RBI, and two stolen bases.
  • Urquidez paced the way with two hits, while Paredes, Leger, and Sierra Wooley also registered a hit. Paredes collected the lone RBI of the game.
  • Leger takes the loss after throwing all six innings with 10 strikeouts and five walks.
  • Genesis Armendariz collects the win with five hits conceded and one run allowed with five strikeouts.

GAME TWO: ASU 8, ENMU 7

The Rambelles struck first in the first, after a pair of hits brought home the games first run, 1-0. ENMU base runners in the next half inning, after two walks and a fielder’s choice. Ashlee Lucero produced a deep fly ball for the first out of the inning, but sent the runner on third home to tie the game at 1-1.

The home team stormed back in the second inning, plating a total of three runs to take a 4-1 lead. The Greyhounds picked up two runs in the fifth inning, following a pair of base hits. Maite Bustillos reached on an error, and Wooley brought Bustillos home with a triple, making the score 4-2. The next batter, Urquidez singled through the left side to plate Wooley and push the score to 4-3.

However, ASU reestablished a cushion scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth. With an 8-3 advantage going into the seventh inning. After Eastern took one run back in the seventh as Patterson scored on a wild pitch, as the Hounds started to put base runners on. Three walks brought the game tying run to the plate with two outs and the bases loaded for ENMU. Leger cleared the bases with a double to the left center gap to score three runs, but was cut down advancing to third. The game ended, 8-7 in favor of Angelo State as the Hounds came up just short of the comeback.

NOTABLE STATS

  • ENMU finished the game with seven runs on six hits, scoring seven runs with six RBI’s.
  • Urquidez finished the game 2-4 with an RBI. Leger had one hit in their lone at bat, with a team high three RBI’s. Patterson, Azalea Martinez, and Wooley also had a base hit in the game.
  • On the mound, Urquidez takes the loss after throwing two innings in relief, allowing three runs from two hits and two walks. Four other Greyhounds pitched during the game, with Jordan Bowman going 3.2 innings with four runs allowed and six hits. Leger faced one batter and recorded a strikeout.
  • Torrey Hogan collected the win for the Rambelles in 6.1 innings of work. Hogan finished with three runs allowed (one run earned) from five hits.

“This series was a tough one, losing by one run in both games, and still having an opportunity in the last inning to get it done was hard,” said Head Softball Coach Amanda Fefel. “Our pitching staff truly embodied knowing thier role o be able to come in and throw quality inning/outs. Our team dosen’t quit and for that I am so proud of them,” said Fefel.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Both games were only separated by one run, the closest games between the two teams since 2017 when ASU picked up a 4-3 win on 3/10/17.
  • Urquidez found multiple hits in both games, and Leger hit double-digit strikeouts for the sixth time this season.
  • Angelo State hold the all-time series lead between the two teams, 60-9.
  • The Hounds look to bounce back against #15 Lubbock Christian University on Monday, Mar. 14, in Lubbock, Texas. Game one will commence at 12 pm (MST), with game two to follow directly after.
