ENMU WILL PLAY SEVEN SERIES AT HOME AND PARTICIPATE IN TWO NONCONFERENCE TOURNAMENTS

Batter’s up! It is time for the 2023 Eastern New Mexico softball season.

“We’re excited about this year’s schedule,” said head coach Amanda Fefel. “It’s a great mix of regional opponents who will help us prepare for our tough LSC schedule.”

Eastern will play seven series at home, including matchups with UT Tyler and Texas A&M-Kingsville who finished atop the LSC.

The Greyhounds will hit the diamond for the first this year in exactly one month as they head to Lubbock Christian (LCU) for a nonconference tournament Feb. 3-5.

ENMU will face Chadron State in a doubleheader at LCU on Feb. 8. Two days later, the Hounds will head north for a tournament hosted by West Texas A&M, Feb. 10-12, where they will face three RMAC foes – New Mexico Highlands, Fort Lewis, and Colorado Mesa.

Conference play begins Feb. 17-18 as Eastern travels to face a St. Mary’s squad coming off 38 wins a year ago.

The first home series is set for Feb. 21-22 when the Greyhounds welcome in-state conference foe, Western New Mexico. The Mustangs finished 16th in league standings in 2021.

Other conference road contests for ENMU includes trips to St. Edward’s (Feb. 25-26), Lubbock Christian (Mar. 7-8), Angelo State (Mar. 17-18), UTPB (Mar. 25-26), Midwestern State (Apr. 6-7), and Oklahoma Christian (Apr. 15-16).

At home, fans can catch the Hounds face Texas A&M International (Mar. 3-4), Cameron (Mar. 11-12), West Texas A&M (Mar. 21-22), UT Tyler (Mar. 31-Apr. 1), Texas Woman’s (Apr. 11-12), and Texas A&M-Kingsville (Apr. 28-29).

The Greyhounds will also finish nonconference play with a road trip to New Mexico Highlands on Apr. 19.

“I want our team to be battle tested early so that we can mentally and physically put all the right pieces together to have a successful season,” said Fefel on the team’s 2023 slate. “With the new LSC schedule format we look forward to hosting a couple of midweek series this year and hope that students, faculty, staff, and members of our community can catch our team in action.”

Last year, the Hounds finished 10th in arguably the toughest conference in NCAA DII softball as seven programs earned bids to the NCAA Softball Championship.

ENMU returns starting ace Brook Leger who finished 2021 with 11 of the team’s 18 victories and struck out a conference leading 169 batters. She also recorded 13 complete games over her sophomore campaign. Two hitters coming back for Eastern hit above .300 a year ago –Edyn Lopez (.324) and Azalea Martinez (.315).

Fans are encouraged to purchase the LSC Digital Network season pass to catch all 2023 Greyhound games.
