PORTALES, NM — A scintillating 50-yard run by junior running back Kamal Cass highlighted a second-half effort which propelled the Silver Team to victory, as the Eastern New Mexico University football team concluded spring practice. Cass scored on a three-yard plunge just two plays later as the Silver team went on to a 14-0 win.
“That was a positive,” Head Coach Kelley Lee said when asked about the game’s physicality. “There were some good hits.”
The game was a defensive struggle early on, but both teams’ running games came on. The Silver team rushed for 148 yards, while Green ran for 68 yards. Cass finished with 98 rushing yards, while Ismail Garrett ran for 41 yards for the Green team. Wyatt Strand was sharp and completed four passes.
“I thought the running backs ran hard,” Lee added. “We were thin up front with the offensive linemen playing a lot of snaps. They played hard.”
Fe’ao Vunipola had 11 tackles for the silver team, while De’Aundre Shorts had nine for the Green Team.
The Silver team added an insurance score late in the third quarter, when Matthew Carr returned a fumble 30 yards to go ahead 14-0.
