A memorial service for Sherrye (McGuyer) Burleson will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, August 21, 2021, at Third & Kilgore Church of Christ with Glen Bowman officiating. Sherrye Burleson, 76, of Portales was born on November 13, 1944, in Sudan, Texas, to the home of Nannie Elizabeth (Lee) and Melvin Thomas McGuyer, and died on August 7, 2021 in Portales. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the New Mexico Christian Children’s Home, 1356 New Mexico 236, Portales, NM 88130-9411.
After Sherrye received her Associates Degree she worked at the Registrar’s office, the Dean’s office of the School of Communicative Arts and Sciences, and the ENMU Broadcast Center. After fifteen years she went to help her husband who was self-employed. After his passing, she returned to ENMU to work in the library in August, 1997. Sherrye felt her job was rewarding due to being able to help and encourage the students. She thought of them as her “adopted by love” family.
Sherrye volunteered at the Church of Christ Greyhounds for Christ ministry on campus and helped with various activities. She was a member of the county Homemakers Extension Clubs. Sherrye was a member of Third and Kilgore Church of Christ. She enjoyed talking to people and encouraging them through conversation and giving out inspirational books to help them through challenging times.
Sherrye was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, a brother, Bennett McGuyer and a sister, Tempe Harper.
She is survived by her sister-in-law, Wyvona McGuyer of Clovis, a nephew, Mike McGuyer and wife Becky of Idaho Falls, ID, two nieces, Karyn Lacy and husband Robert of Lubbock and Kathy Gilbert of Clovis, a great nephew, Ryan Lacy and wife Taylor of Lubbock and a great niece, Krysta Lacy of Dallas.
