Graveside services for Shannon Gorrell, 83, of Portales, will be held at 2:00 PM, Sat., Sept. 10, 2022 in the Causey Cemetery with Rev. Wayne Kinman officiating. Scott Campbell, Raul Vixcaino, Xzavier Viscaino, Bill Watson, Guy Campbell and Ralph Leonard will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive guests at the funeral home on Friday evening from 6 until 8 PM.
Shannon Morris Gorrell was born Aug. 27, 1939 in Portales to the home of Nellie Bethina (Cox) and James “Morris” Gorrell, and died at his home in Portales in Sept. 6, 2022. He was a 1957 graduate of Portales High School. After graduation he worked driving a cattle truck for his father at Gorrell Trucking. In the early 1980’s he went to work for AMPI, and then Southwest Canners, before starting to drive for WalMart. He was forced to retire in the early 1990’s due to is health.
ON Oct. 12, 1963, he was married to Mary Elliott. Shannon enjoyed doing woodworking, and had made severl pieces of furniture. He also liked to go fishing. As a young man, Shannon did some car racing. Although he could not read music, he taught himself how to play the guitar, and enjoyed playing and singing. He was a member of the Baptist church.
He is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Sabra Gorrell of Portales and Shanna and Scott Campbell of Elida, NM; three grandchildren, Jennalee Watson and her companion, Raul Viscaino, Krystal Watson and Jayce Victor; and nine great-grandchildren, Xzavier, Zaliyah, Xzavien, Xzaydrien, Tiauna, Tucker, Lynnae, Jordan, Madison and Lille. He was preceded in death by both of his parents, a brother, Dexter Gorrell, two sisters, Edith Nix and Joanne Brown, as well as by his wife, Mary, who died Dec. 10, 2012.
