PORTALES, NM – The Eastern New Mexico University men’s basketball team signed Brian Roberts this past week in part of National Signing Day. The forward joins the Greyhounds after playing at Western Texas Junior College.
“I am so excited that Brian has chosen to be a part of our Greyhound Family,” ENMU Head Coach Tres Segler said. “Brian’s work ethic and athletic ability made him a standout in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference. He was widely known as one of the toughest and hardest working big men in a junior college region that produces high-major Division I recruits year after year. He is a tireless defender that uses his 7’2” wingspan to block shots and rebound. He ranked seventh in the WJCAC in blocked shots and 11th overall in Region 5 in blocks, and he did so at 6’6. We look forward to seeing Brian’s high motor and relentless approach to winning impact our program here at ENMU. We pride ourselves in being one of the toughest and hardest working programs in the Lone Star Conference, and we know that Brian will elevate our standards and expectations. Brian played for a great coach and coaching staff at Western Texas Junior College, and Coach Owens highly valued Brian’s daily work ethic and mature approach to improvement. His family is incredibly excited for him to join the Greyhound Nation, and we are incredibly hopeful for his time here as a Hound.”
Last season at WTC, Roberts shot 52% from the field and swatted away 35 shot attempts. He notched a double-double against Wayland Baptist with 10 points and 11 boards while scoring in double-figures in six games last year. Highlighting his career at WTC, Roberts grabbed 15 rebounds against NMJC on Feb. 6.
At Jamestown Community College his freshman year, the Cleveland, Ohio, native pulled down almost eight boards a game while shooting 60% from the field. Prior to JCC, Roberts was the John Hay High School Defensive Player of the Year.
The Greyhounds return six players from last season’s 13-15 squad. Head Coach Tres Segler led the Green and Silver to the most Lone Star Conference wins as a first-year head coach during the 2016-17 campaign. Additionally, Segler’s Hounds had the third-most wins under a first-year head coach.
