Obituary

Funeral services for Robert Morgan, 90, of Portales, will be held at 2:00 PM, Sat., Aug. 27, 2022 in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Brad Morgan and Rev. Wesley McAfee officiating.  Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery with Clayton Wilhoit, Tyler Wilhoit, John Rose, Tucker Morgan, Lee Caywood, Brant Wilhoit, Chayton Caywood, Ryan LaRue, Jerad LaRue, Jarrick Baldock, Alex Luscombe and Coulter Wilhoit serving as pallbearers.  All of his other grandchildren and great-grandchildren have been named as honorary pallbearers.  The family will receive guests at the funeral home on Friday evening from 6 to 8 PM.

Robert Lee Morgan was born April 19, 1932 in Lubbock, TX to the home of Alma Myrtle (Holmsley) and Chesley Clark Ramsey Morgan and died Aug. 24, 2022 in Clovis, NM.  The family moved to Portales in 1934.  Robert attended school in Portales, but left school when his father died to go to work to help support the family.  On Oct. 7, 1951 he was married to Alma Ellen Jewett.  For a time, he worked in a local grocery store before entering the US Army in Aug. of 1952.  During the two years that he served, he was stationed in Alabama where he was a cook.  Following his discharge in June of 1954, they returned to Portales, and he again was employed in a local grocery store.  Mr Morgan began farming in the Arch community in 1956, and in 1960, the family built a home and moved to Arch.  Mr. Morgan had a talent for being able to do his work, and still never look dirty or get his hands greasy.  He had been retired since the late 1990’s.

His wife, Alma Morgan preceded him in death on Sept. 28, 1982, and on April 10, 1983 he was married to Joyce Morgan.  They often spent time fishing at their place at Ute Lake, and traveling in their RV.  He enjoyed riding his motorcycle for several years until he had a mishap.  They also enjoyed Square Dancing with the Starlight Swingers Dance Club.  He was a member of the Baptist Church.

He is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Vicky and Berry Wilhoit of Portales and Sherry Rose of Arch; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Brenda Morgan of Lazbuddie, TX and Don Morgan of Floyd, NM and two step-sons and daughters-in-law, Bobby and Christine Morgan of Clovis, NM and David and Rosemary Morgan of Austin, TX; twelve grandchildren, Tawna (Paul) Luscombe, Clayton (Robin) Wilhoit, Tyler (Shay) Wilhoit, Mary Ellen Watson, John (Kaylee) Rose, Amanda (Michael) Mapp, Jennie (Daniel) Caywood, Kalynn (Patrick) Baldock, Ryan (Jordyn) LaRue, Jerad LaRue, Tucker (Bradi) Morgan, and Destini Morgan along with several other step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews and family members.  He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Hershel, Hillary, Vaughnie and Richard Morgan, two sisters, Lois Fox and Nellie Nettie Marie Morgan who died as an infant,a grandson, Aaron LaRue, as well as his second wife, Joyce, who died April 7, 2018.
