Robert Alvin Stokes, known as Bob, was born Nov. 11, 1944 in Portales to the home of Myra “Nell” (Riley) and Robert Alvin Emory Stokes. He passed away on December 27, 2024, in Amarillo, Texas. Raised in Portales, Bob attended local schools and married Alice Ingram in 1966. Bob served a term in the Army National Guard and worked alongside his father in the family business, Stokes Farm Supply. Later, he farmed East of Portales and operated Stokes Trucking.
Bob was known for his quick wit and his ability to repair just about anything. He put both of these skills to good use throughout his life. He had a lifelong passion for hot rods and could name most engines in two notes. Bob had many fond memories of playing basketball and volleyball in area leagues as a young man and his love of sports continued throughout his lifetime, especially watching his granddaughters in their sporting events. He enjoyed time spent laughing with his granddaughters and his great-niece’s children, Sophie, Claire, and Camryn.
He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Dawn Stokes and husband, Dean Score of Austin, TX and Kristie Stokes Phillips and husband, Jim of Rosenberg, TX; two grandchildren Terin and Tayla Score; a brother, Jerry Stokes of Dora, NM; and two sisters, Betty Stokes of Portales and Ida Nicholson of Lake Worth, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Jean Stokes.
Bob bravely lived with kidney failure for almost ten years. In his memory, the family asks that those who knew him consider becoming an organ donor through https://www.organdonor.gov/ or your local motor vehicle office.
