Portales, NM – January 29, 2024 – Representative Teresa Leger Fernández presented a Congressional Record Certificate to the Eastern New Mexico University Greyhound Sound Marching Band on Friday, January 26, at Buchanan Hall in the Music Building on the ENMU main campus.
The Certificate recognized Eastern New Mexico University’s marching band, ‘Greyhound Sound,’ for their victory in the inaugural Metallica Marching Band Competition. The Greyhound Sound’s outstanding performance secured the top spot in the college competition for Divisions 2 and 3 schools, earning the school a well-deserved prize of $40,000 in marching band equipment.
“When I saw the story about the Greyhound Sound’s impressive showing in the Metallica Marching band competition, I knew I had to come and say congratulations in person,” said Representative Leger Fernández. “I am so happy to meet this impressive and talented group of students today!”
The Congressional Record Certificate will live in the Congressional Record, a record of the proceedings of Congress, ensuring that the ENMU Greyhound Sound will be remembered for its accomplishments for all time.
“We are extremely proud of our Greyhound Sound and their performance in the Metallica For Whom the Band Tolls competition,” said James Johnston, ENMU Chancellor. “I am also very grateful for representative Leger Fernandez, taking the time from her busy schedule to recognize the achievement and congratulate our students. I know it means a lot to them as well.”
This past year, Metallica announced the inaugural marching band competition for Universities and High Schools, titled “For Whom the Band Tolls,” with over $180,000 in prizes to be awarded. ENMU took the Division 2 and 3 college prize in the nationwide competition.
The winners were announced on January 7, 2024, on the Championship Drive: Countdown to Kickoff show on ESPN and Metallica.com. For a full listing of winners, visit https://www.metallica.com/news/2024-01-07-for-whom-the-band-tolls-and-the-winners-are.html.
