Funding Available for Projects that Enhance Public Outdoor Recreation and Conservation
SANTA FE, NM – New Mexico communities, tribal organizations, and local governments are reminded that the deadline to apply for the 2024 Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) grants is fast approaching. Applications must be submitted by Friday, November 30, 2024, to be considered for funding in the upcoming year.
The LWCF is a key federal program that supports the acquisition, development, and conservation of public parks, recreational areas, and open spaces across the nation. In New Mexico, LWCF grants are administered by the New Mexico State Parks Division and are intended to help local communities enhance access to outdoor recreation, conserve natural resources, and improve quality of life.
“We encourage all eligible organizations, municipalities, and tribal governments to take advantage of this funding opportunity,” said Toby Velasquez, Director of New Mexico State Parks. “The Land and Water Conservation Fund has been an essential tool for supporting outdoor projects in New Mexico, from playgrounds and sports fields to trail systems and natural area conservation. We want to ensure that our parks and public spaces continue to meet the needs of our growing communities while preserving our unique environment for future generations.”
Over the years, LWCF funding has supported numerous successful projects throughout New Mexico. In 2024, awards have been given to the cities of Albuquerque, Carlsbad, Deming, Farmington, Las Cruces, Las Vegas, Red River, Santa Rosa, and Socorro. Bernalillo County and Curry County have also benefitted from the program bringing close to four million dollars to New Mexico’s outdoor recreation spaces.
