The Portales Rams hosted to Bernalillo High on Friday. Kickoff was at 7 PM, and with good weather, hundreds of fans in attendance and the Rams coming off a big shutout win last week, Portales was ready to play!
The first quarter was looking scoreless for the two teams, but just a few minutes before the quarter ended, Portales gained points after kicking a deep punt to Bernalillo, then tackling the receiving running back in the end zone for a safety. Two points were added to the scoreboard. That set tone for the remainder of the game.
The quarter ended shortly after the safety, and the Rams forced a 3 and out for the Spartans. On Portales’ next possession, quarterback #1 Paxton Culpepper completed a pass to wide receiver #11 Zane Mayberry for a touchdown. The PAT following was good, and Portales was up 8-0.
The Rams scored again on their next possession. The defense stopped Bernalillo quickly, and then Culpepper completed a long 49-yard pass to wide receiver #8 Tommy Lopez for another touchdown. The point after was missed, but the Rams went into halftime 22-0 over the Spartans.
Portales got the ball first after halftime, and scored on their first possession with Culpepper completing a 68-yard pass to Mayberry. With a successful score after, the Rams continued their lead 28-0.
The defense held off Bernalillo again, and then Culpepper scored at the end of the 3rd quarter with a 17 yard rushing touchdown, extending their lead 36-0.
Bernalillo tried their best in the 4th and got a pick 6 interception that was run back for a touchdown. Adding 6 points to the scoreboard. The score was the only one they made, while Portales tacked on a couple more scores.
The final was 50-6, and the Rams continue their excellent record. 2-0 in district, 8-1 on the season.
