Coaches Report by Matt Hunton:
The Portales Ram boys golf team began play in the annual Spring Classic golf tournament in Roswell, New Mexico. It is a two day tournament played at New Mexico Military Institute and Spring River golf course. We played round one at NMMI.
The boys got off to a slow start, but really got going in the middle of the round. We’ve been working and talking a lot about finishing strong. That has seemed to be our struggle until today. The boys fought hard and finished strong. Senior Thomas Tulk led the way shooting an even par 72. His 72 puts him two shots out of first place behind Sergio Amiaiero of NMMI who shot a two under par 70. Senior Mario Cordova fired his best round of the season and his high school golf career shooting a five over par 77. Junior Austin Davis missed an individual qualifying leg by one shot, shooting an 81. Senior Andrew Underbrink struggled on the greens, but was able to get around the golf course with an 83. Sophomore Talon Payne shot an 86. He got off to a slow start, but stayed focused and turned it around. This gave our boys a team score of 313 and puts us in fourth place going in to tomorrow’s final round at Spring River. We head to a golf course we are familiar with from the state tournament last year. Our boys are focused and ready to improve tomorrow on what we started today.
