The New Mexico Racing Commission visited Clovis on Friday to hear presentations from 3 entities who have applied for the final horse racing license in the state. People lined Schepps Blvd. early that morning with yellow shirts on and blue balloons in hand (or tied to their vehicles) to welcome the commissioners to the Clovis Civic Center.
Banners were hung in multiple places with “Welcome NM Racing Commission” in big, bold letters, and a bright, “Say Yes to Clovis” on the side of each. Clovis citizens appeared pleased to welcome the commissioners to the area.
The presentations began at 9 am that morning, with Full House Resorts presenting first. Their presentation was followed by Shaun Hubbard Group, and finally L&M Entertainment. All of whom have a detailed plan for what they would like to create. Their visions are much different, and if Clovis is chosen, the Racing Commission will have to determine which route will be best for the community and state.
While there were quite a few public comments from those opposed to the Racino, including comments from Mayor David Lansford, the consensus was mainly positive. Many citizens, including chamber members like Tom Martin of Taco Box, spoke highly in favor of bringing a Racino to the area and how beneficial it would be for the economy and community. The 3 entities also seem to be certain that not only the state will benefit, but also the community.
Around 500 citizens showed up for the public comment period, and the Racing Commission was able to hear from many different citizens of the area.
Vision 2020 provided a delicious meal for all in attendance, and sent the Racing Commission off with lots to ponder.
There is no set timeline as to when the final decision will be made, but it is guaranteed to be decided by the end of the year.
