On Sunday, July 21, 2024, at approximately 10:21 p.m. the Portales Police Department responded to a reported gunshot victim in the 300 block of South Avenue E. Upon arrival officers located Demariay Singleton, 18, of Portales inside a residence bleeding from the head. Singleton was transported to the Roosevelt General Hospital for his injuries. The residence was occupied by multiple juveniles and adults, that provided initial information that the injury was from an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The Portales Police Department along with the 9th Judicial District Major Crimes Unit investigators conducted an investigation into the incident and on July 23, 2024 an arrest warrant was obtained for a 16 year old juvenile for negligent manslaughter, tampering with evidence, unlawful possession of a firearm.
