PMSD went live with a new online program to enroll students for the coming year.  We are asking that all students register in this program, whether they were in school last year or are new to the District.  This year has placed a great deal more emphasis on parents completing the enrollment because it has some very important questions regarding internet connectivity and whether a family has a computer for their child’s instruction.  It also asks parents whether they want their child to come to school in-person when we are allowed to open or whether they want their children to remain online for their education.  Although we are starting the school year for 7th – 12th grade online, we are hoping to open in-person by mid to late September, and we still need to know which students will not return to the building, but will instead remain online.

This program will also make the registration process much easier for parents in the future, and should even help this year.  If parents get into the program correctly, they can see all of their children in one place.  All of the demographic information, such as address, phone numbers, etc., populate for each child.  This then means parents do not have to complete the same paperwork for every child in the school system.  There may be some additional information needed depending on the child’s needs, but all of the other information won’t have to be repeated for each child.  Then, next year when a parent registers their child or children, all they have to do is confirm the address, phone number, and email address and the process should be done.  Of course there will still be some paperwork that needs to be done at the school, but a great deal less than would otherwise be the case.

Teachers will return to work on August 10th.  We are providing more training for teaching online and in the distance environment.  Even though elementary students will return to school in-person, we want to make sure our teachers have the training in case they are not allowed to return in-person or if at some points schools are forced to close for another round of COVID.

Grades 7-12 will begin online on August 18th.  With the latest guidance from the Public Education Department (PED), these grades could be allowed to return to the building by mid to late September with 7th & 8th grade students returning and phasing in 9-12 over the following weeks.  This “phase-in” plan will be determined by PED and will be based on certain “gating” criteria created by PED and DOH.

Grades PK-6 students will return to their building on September 8th.  As of today, we are working on plans to allow small group instruction for struggling students to return prior to September 8th in person with a ratio of 1 teacher to 5 students.  Students who qualify for this instruction will be contacted by their school.  Some students who require Special Education services will also be allowed to return on the 5:1 ratio at all grade levels.  We will also use the time between August 17-September 4 to try to assess all of our students in grades PK-6 so that teachers can properly prepare for any educational gaps that might have been caused due to the last year’s school closing and online instruction.  Parents will be notified about times for these assessments of their children.

Regarding parents who do not feel safe allowing their children to return to the schools for school, we are offering a distance solution.  Each grade level will have teachers who will be dedicated to on-line instruction only.  These teachers will deliver online and virtual instruction to students who are in the distance education environment full-time.  These students will have the same expectations as a student who is attending school in a building.  They must be prepared to be online during class times and do the assignments and projects in a timely manner.  We will expect the same rigor and content as if the students were in the building.   These students will be accountable to attendance and classwork like students who are in-person.  Junior High and High School students will be provided Edgenuity, which provides instruction and lessons in all core subjects and electives.  Teachers have been assigned to provide support for all students who participate in the Edgenuity program and will provide additional tutoring or assistance as needed to help students to successfully complete these classes.
