Peggy Ann Kizer was born on January 6th, 1940, to William Ruben and Ivy Iona (Helmer) Kizer in Morton, Texas, and passed away on February 26th after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s. After Peggy graduated from High School in Dora, NM, she went on to study at Lubbock Christian College and Abilene Christian University. Peggy went back to college at Eastern New Mexico University and received her bachelor’s degree in Home Economics and Business in 1985.
While attending Abilene Christian University She met and Married James A. Hinderliter. Her husband of 16 years.
Undoubtedly she had many jobs growing up as a girl on a farm. One of the jobs she said she really disliked was gathering the eggs after dark when she should have already gathered them earlier in the day. She said there would often be a bull snake in the nest boxes after dark! Peggy milled cotton at Abilene USDA Cotton Classing. Later she worked as a teletypist for the following newspapers Abilene News Reporter, Odessa American and the Pensacola News Journal. She could type 80 words per minute! Proficient at shorthand, Peggy could write notes only she could read. Peggy helped her dad on the farm driving a tractor and grain truck. She also worked for her brother Mack Kizer on the farm driving a tractor, as well as grain and semi-trucks.
Peggy taught high school for several years before deciding that wasn’t for her, she wanted to drive a semi-truck. Peggy went to driving school to get her CDL in Amarillo, Texas. She drove in 48 states and Canada. Her last driving job was for Keith Carmichael, which she did until she was 68 years old.
Peggy was good at anything she wanted to do. She was an artist, painting scenes in oils, pencil drawings, sewing, quilting and woodworking. Peggy also loved sports, Tennis, Racquetball, Volleyball, Swimming and board games (yes, board games were a sport to Peggy. She really liked to win!) Checkers were her favorite.
