M. Sue Dehtan Obituary

M. Sue Dehtan, born on June 17, 1944, in Portales, New Mexico, to John Ed and Geraldine Waide, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2024, in Lubbock, Texas, surrounded by loved ones.
Sue spent her early years in Portales, NM, and graduated from Floyd High School in 1963. On July 17, 1965, she married Bud Dehtan, with whom she shared forty-nine wonderful years. Throughout her life, Sue worked in various places, including a fourteen-year tenure as a manager at the local Allsup’s Convenience Store. After retirement, Sue and Bud relocated to Logan, NM, where she discovered her passion for ceramics and crocheting. Later in life Sue and Bud relocated back to Portales to spend more time with their family. She treasured the moments spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who she loved all the way to the moon and back. Sue also enjoyed listening to George Jones, gospel music and watching good ol’ Westerns on TV.

Sue was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Harvey “Bud” Dehtan, her parents, John Ed and Geraldine Waide, step-son Robert Dehtan her brother Kenneth Waide of Clovis, NM, sister-in-law Aline Waide, niece and nephew Karen & Stoney Waide and her brother-in-law Neal Foster of Plains, KS. She is survived by her daughters, Melony Schappell and her husband Jon of Kempner, Texas, and Stacy Hobbs and her husband Derald of Portales, New Mexico. Step-daughters June Shipp and Barbara Parker. She leaves behind her cherished grandchildren, Valarie Nippert, Vanessa Mills, Tanya Bechthold, Latisha Bollema, Kari Wall, Grider Gossett, William Poff, Gary Squires and Shannon Westerman along with nineteen great-grandchildren. Sue is also survived by her sisters, Ravenna Foster of Plains, KS, and Mary E. Waide of Barnswell, SC, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
To honor Sue’s memory, we will hold a celebration of her life on Saturday , June 15, 2024 at 10:00 AM at the Portales Cemetery. We invite all who knew her to join us in remembering and celebrating her remarkable life.
