Emma Baca Obituary
The Rosary for Emma Baca, 93, of Portales will be recited at 6:00 PM, Tues, Dec. 3, 2024 at the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel. The Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10:00 AM, Wed., Dec. 4, 2024 at St. Helen Catholic Church by Fr. Francisco Carbajal. Burial will be in the Portales Cemetery with Ivan Rodriguez, Manuel Rodriguez, Nicolas Bara, Salvador Bara, D’Angelo Segovia and Azriel Bara serving as pallbearers.
Emma Andrea Baca was born Nov. 30, 1930 in Fort Sumner, NM to the home of Cornelia (Baca) and Trinidad Salguero, and died just two days short of her 94th birthday on Nov. 28, 2024 at her home. Mrs. Baca grew up in the Taiban community. It was while she was working in the kitchen at a local café that she met her husband, Arturo Baca. They were married in Sant Rosa, NM on Nov. 25, 1949. They made their home in Portales, where she remained for the rest of her life.
Mrs. Baca was a loving and devoted wife and mother to ten children. She was a wonderful cook, and loved to bake. She loved to spoil each one of her children and later grandchildren with their favorite treat. Among the favorites were her pineapple cake, her sugar cookies and her pumpkin bread. Mrs. Baca also enjoyed sewing. She loved to watch the Soap Operas, both in English and in Spanish. Mrs. Baca also like to do Word Search puzzles.
She was a devout Catholic lady, that taught her children to love the Lord. Her influence reached far beyond her family members to neighbors and friends. Mrs. Baca spent many hours in prayer. She was a very generous person and was always ready to sacrifice for other people.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Albert and Jennifer Baca of Clovis; seven daughters and a son-in-law, Bernadette and Dane Smedley, Susie Baca, Juanita Bara, Nathalia Baca, Petrita Baca, Sylvia Baca and Agapita Baca all of Portales; eight grandchildren, Manuel Rodriguez, Gregory Smedley, Andrea Bell, Amanda Baca, Angelica Lopez, Nicolas and Salvador Bara and Adriana Ornelas, fourteen great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ramon Salguero of Liberal, KS and Richard Salguero of Rio Rancho; and two sisters, Leonela Baca of Portales and Patricia Lucero of Amarillo, TX. She was preceded in death by both of her parents, four brothers, Pino, Horacio, Octavio and Antonio Salguero, a sister, Diana Salguero, two daughters, Teresa Gonzales in 2021 and Diana Rodriguez in 2002, three grandchildren, Adriana Rodriguez, Angela Smedley and Brian Joel Baca, as well as by her beloved husband, Arturo Baca who died in 2005.
