Official Obituary of Antonio Diaz June 13, 1954 ~ June 28, 2024 (age 70)

Funeral services for Antonio Diaz, 70, of Portales will be held at 10:00 AM, Wed., July 3, 2024 in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel with Pastor Arturo Munoz officiating, assisted by Pastor Socorro Miranda.  Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery with Enrique Diaz, Anthony Diaz, Damian Jacovo, Uziel Jacovo, Jose Diaz, Jr., and Edgar Madrid serving as pallbearers.  All of his other grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Antonio Diaz-Zamirripa was born June 13, 1954 in Juarez, Mexico to the home of Socorro (Zamirripa) and Victor Diaz, and died Friday evening, June 28, 2024 in Lubbock, TX.  On Mar. 8, 1971 in Juarez, he was married to Maria De Jesus Ruiz.  Mr. Diaz owned and operated bakeries in Juarez before coming to Portales in 1984.  At first he worked on local farms.  Later he began working at A&M and later for Craig Hughes as a welder.  He eventually returned to his bakery business, and had a bakery for several years on Main Street in Portales.  He also sold bread and baked goods from his home for many years.  He was known to many in the community as “Panadero” or “Baker.”  Mr. Diaz spent quite a bit of his time working on cars.  He was an outgoing personality, and enjoyed just being with family and friends.

He is survived by Maria, his wife of more than 53 years of their home; his sons, Juan Diaz and Jose Diaz and his wife, Chrisanta of Portales; his daughters, Sylvia Diaz of Clovis and Maribel Jacovo and her husband, Luis of Portales; 20 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; as well as other family members and his many friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Sebastiana Ramirez and Guadalupe Tovar and by two sons, Oscar Diaz and Jesus Diaz.
