Graveside services for Lucy “Irene” Anders, 87, will be at 1:00 PM, Thurs., Nov. 9, 2017 in the Portales Cemetery with Pastor Don Hay officiating. Her many friends and church family will be honorary pallbearers
Lucy Irene Anders, known to everyone as Irene, was born Oct. 7, 1930 in San Jon, NM to the home of Elma (Salyars) and Tom Lafayette Carden and died Nov. 5, 2017 in Portales, NM.
In the early 1950’s she moved to Portales. On June 7, 1952 in San Jon, she was married to Lester Anders. She was a devoted wife, and grieved deeply when her beloved husband, Lester died Sept. 7, 1990. Irene loved animals, especially dogs. She supplemented their income by raising chickens and rabbits. Irene also loved children, and did a lot of babysitting through the years. She had a sizeable collection of dolls. She never learned to drive, so she walked all over town. It was a common sight to see her pulling her little cart with groceries or other things she had purchased. She was very friendly, and visited with everyone she saw. Irene was a devout Christian, and a faithful member of the Church of God .
She is survived by her sister, Lorene Callison of Tucumcari; as well as several nieces and nephews including Linda Ellis and Janet Billot both of Tucumcari. Besides Lester, she was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, Leo, Joe, R. A. and Leslie Carden; and two sisters, Rue English and Josie Hartley.
