Funeral services for Wilma Eaton, 93, formerly of Portales, will be at 2:00 PM, Sat., Dec. 29, 2018 in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Brad Morgan officiating. Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery with Lance Eaton, Seth Eaton, Russell Read, Jace Bulls, Larry Shearer and Lloyd McCargish serving as pallbearers.
Wilma Lee Eaton was born Nov. 18, 1925 in McCloud, OK to the home of Millie (Krause) and Gilbert R. Sparks and died Dec. 23, 2018 in Pagosa Springs, CO where she had been living in recent years. Mrs. Eaton was a 1943 graduate of McCloud High School. On June 11, 1944 she was married to Bill Eaton. Mr. Eaton served in the US Navy, and due to his duty stations, they moved numerous times. After his discharge, they continued to move following his work on pipelines. They finally settled in Amarillo, TX and from there to Los Alamos, NM. In 1969, they made their home in Portales where she remained until 2015 when she moved to Chama, to be with her son.
While living in Amarillo she was trained as a beautician. After moving to Portales, she became licensed in New Mexico, and worked for a time at the Portales Beauty Salon. Wilma enjoyed bowling on a bowling team for several years. She also enjoyed painting, and had taken lessons from Lawanda Calton, a well known local artist. Among the other things she enjoyed were cooking, sewing and gardening. Mrs. Eaton was a faithful member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Portales.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Lance and Patty Eaton of Chama, NM; two grandchildren, Veronica Morris and her friend, Russell Read of Las Vegas, NM and Seth Eaton of Clovis, NM; and two sisters, Marguarite Price of Mechanicsburg, PA and Janie Powell of Lenoir, NC. She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Viccii Bogey who died in 1980 and by her beloved husband, Bill who died Sept. 8, 2000.
