The Rosary for Sadie Gallegos, 88, of Portales, will be recited at 9:00 AM, Fri., Sept. 21, 2018 at St. Helen Catholic Church, and will be followed by the Mass of the Resurrection at 10:00 AM with Fr. Charles Ugochukwu officiating. Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery with Anthony Gallegos, Fabian Gallegos, Joe Chavez, Sr, Jose Manuel Chavez, Jr., Joe Sanchez, Jr. and Joe Sanchez, III serving as pallbearers. All her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Sadie Ida Gallegos was born Oct. 18, 1929 in La Palma, NM to the home of Josefita (Montoya) and Miguel Chavez and died Sept. 16, 2018 in Albuquerque. Her family first came to Portales when she about 15 years old to work in the fields. For several years they moved back and forth, as work varied depending on the farming seasons. On Dec. 19, 1949 she was married to Albino Gallegos. Sadie worked as a dishwasher at the Hiway 70 Truck Stop and at Coats and Coats Truck Stop as well as at the Sands Restaurant. In between, she often did field work as well. She loved to dress up and go dancing. She also enjoyed playing Bingo and at times she had done some quilting.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Manuel and Patricia Gallegos of Portales; four daughters, Linda Sanchez and Stella Gallegos both of Portales and Loretta Ortega and Cindy Gallegos both of Albuquerque; 17 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Jane Chavez of Moriarty, NM. She was preceded in death by both of her parents, two brothers, George Chavez and Mike Chavez, Jr.; a sister, Celia Ortega; two sons, Joe and Ricardo “Ricky” Gallegos and by her husband, Albino Gallegos who died July 29, 1979.
