Graveside committal services for Wayne Disney, 75, of Portales, will be at 2:00 PM, Mon., Dec. 3, 2018 in the Portales Cemetery. Owen Dwayne Disney, known to family and friends alike as Wayne, was born May 11, 1943 in Clovis, NM to the home of Gladys Matilda (Onstott) and Owen Disney and died Nov. 27, 2018 in Lubbock, TX where he had been hospitalized recently. Mr. Disney graduated from Portales High School in 1961, and went on to study an New Mexico State University in Las Cruces. He was chosen by FFA as the Pacific Region Star Farmer for the year 1963. It while he was attending college, that he met his future wife, Carole “Sue” Byers. The couple was married Mar. 12, 1964 in Las Cruces. He graduated from the University of Nebraska in Omaha in 1973.
Wayne began his military career in 1963 in the New Mexico National Guard. He became active duty in 1967, and served in Viet Nam in 1968-69. In all he served overseas for five years. Wayne was an Air Defense Officer, and retired as a Lt. Colonel in 1989.
Since his retirement from the military, Mr. Disney raised registered Red Angus cattle, and owned and operated Slash D-Three Feed Store in Portales. He sold the store in 2013 after operating it for 15 years. For relaxation and enjoyment, he did trap shooting, and competed over a wide area.
Mr. Disney is survived by Sue, his wife of more than 54 years of Portales; a son, Dwayne Disney of Portales; a daughter and son-in-law, Becky and Ron Rogers of Portales; and four grandchildren, Justin and Colby Rogers and Haley Lorrayne and Logan Disney. He was preceded in death by both of his parents.
