Leland Joseph Pool was born May 21, 1933 in Earth, TX to the home of Minnie Alma (Seales) and A. R. “Ray” Pool, and died Nov. 21, 2018 in Clovis, NM where he had lived for the past several years. Leland was a cheerleader for the Portales Rams, and graduated from Portales High School in 1951. He attended E.N.M.U. for a year, before being drafted into the US Army. On July 16, 1952 in Portales, he was married to Betty Holloman. After Leland was released from the service, he began his farming career. For more than 50 years, he farmed in the Bethel community.
Leland was very active in the Bethel Baptist Church, where he was a member for 53 years, and served as a deacon for many years. He was also active in the Farm Bureau, where he had served on the board and in several of the offices. The Pool family was chosen as the Farm Family of the Year for the State of New Mexico in 1971. Even though Leland never served overseas, or was injured in the military, he actively supported the Disabled Veterans organization.
For relaxation and enjoyment, Leland enjoyed bowling on a league and playing 42 and also loved to travel. However, everything took a back seat when it came to his family. He attended countless sporting events and activities for his children and grandchildren, and he was just as devoted to his church family.
He is survived by Betty, his wife of over 66 years of Clovis; two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Vonna Pool of Burleson, TX and Don and Ronda Pool of Clovis, NM; two daughters and sons-in-law, Laquitha and Tim Crozier of Lubbock, TX and Ronda and Don Dalley of Clovis; 13 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Joy and James Riley of Littleton, CO; and a sister-in-law, Verna Pool of New Castle, OK. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Billy Ray and K. D. Pool and three sisters, Geraldine Pittillo, Havah Haley and Jackie Boyd.
