Funeral services for Lavon Rhodes, 85, of Portales will be at 2:00 PM, Tues., Dec. 11, 2018 in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Roland McGregor officiating. Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery with Willis Wade, Joey Dunsworth, Kyler Dunsworth, Chad Rhodes, Josh Plummer and Anthony Rhodes serving as pallbearers.

Lavon Rhodes was born Sept. 5, 1933 in Elida, NM to the home of Jewel (Bostick) and Joseph W. Singleton, and died Dec. 8, 2018 in Lubbock, TX. On July 18, 1949 in Portales she was married to Louis Rhodes. They left the area soon after their marriage, and moved to Silver City. In the mid 1950’s they began moving with his job with the Telephone company. They continued moving for the next several years until finally being settled in Santa Rosa where they lived until 1970. After her husband retired in 1982 they moved to Le Flore, OK, and then 1989 they went to Palmyra, IL to make their home near their son. In early Aug. 2018 they returned to Portales.

Mrs. Rhodes enjoyed doing things with her hands. She was a talented artist, and also made various carvings. Lavon also enjoyed sewing and crocheting. She was a member of the Methodist Church.

She is survived by Louis, her husband of more than 69 years; two sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Marcia Rhodes of Palmyra, IL and Larry and Debbie Rhodes of Oklahoma City, OK; another daughter-in-law, Katy Holloway of Tolar, TX; four grandchildren, Chad (Amber) Rhodes, Anthony Rhodes, Mary (Rusty) Evans and Paula (Josh) Plummer; 9 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Maudine Helmer of Portales. She was preceded in death by both of her parents, a brother, Charles Singleton, two sisters, Audie Tidwell and Mildred Archer, a granddaughter, Shawn Marie Rhodes who died in 1989 and a son, Howard Rhodes who died in 1981.
